As the PC was designed by IBM practically from a catalogue and PCDOS/MSDOS was a clone of CP/M ported to 8086 bought in by MS, it's likely Gates didn't say it.
You can add an IF out port on an SMA connector (1st IF is 68MHz on an FT81x and use a cheap DTT USB stick (works from 42MHz up) on a raspberry pi with display hat or a phone/tablet and spectrum display app. Buffer the port with a J310 or similar FET. Using the 2nd IF would need a mixer-osc IC (one chip + crystal) to upconvert to 45 MHz, but would be better, albeit narrower spectrum. Or add both and switch.
