Is there a simple way to temporararily Extend/Shift the Sovereign's FM coverage to 104MHz? Most of the local non Spanish staions here are just above 101MHz.

You could twiddle the oscillator or try this:-
Frequency Shifter for 100-108 MHz FM Reception.PDF (Size: 65 KB / Downloads: 116)
There are ready-made devises available for cars as, apparently, that Japanese FM band is lower than ours so the frequencies need shifting down on their car radios. - Joe

thanks Joe.
I'll have a look in our local chula bazaar. Probably not worth the trouble of making one, or expense ! Mike

You could try a SBL1 or equivelant DBM, antenna straight in, feed 10 Mhz to the osc port, IF port to receiver, match output port as near as can be to 50 ohms, these devices are cheap to buy.

I have used an smd version of the SBL1, as listed here:

Thanks for the suggestions,
I haven't got around to looking at the Chinese offerings yet, but the SBL1 type road could be interesting. I might knock one up with 4 diodes and some ferrite beads, I think I've got an 8MHz Xtal or maybe a 10MHz dil package Xtal osc if It hasn't been chucked out. I'll build it into my charger base, use the same PSU and put some sort of antenna coupler in the base as well. Mike

There's a couple of original NOS SBL1 mixers on Ebay right now, the old style ones with pin outs in a screened can.
If you do homebrew ring mixer try and get the diodes matched as best as possible. Lawrence.

Japan is in ITU Region 3, so their VHF FM broadcasting band is 76 - 90 MHz. Although eastern Europe is in Region 1 (as we are), under the OIRT Scheme they have a band from 65.8 - 74.0 MHz, but that is slowly falling out of use, as the tendency is to 'conform' to the Region 1 87.5 - 108 MHz band. I found this little pcb with the code MD2/504, Probably a modulator for something.
Anyone recognize it ? The pots appear to be 50 Ohm, I'll trace the cct and remove the unwanted bits. I found the little Osc, can't read anything on it now, will have to suck it and see. Mike |
