PC Logic Analyzer

Obtained recently from Ebay for six notes and postage included, an 8 channel logic tester that you can use on your PC via the USB port.  Software does not come with it, but you can download from Saleae on T'Net.

Bit of a pig getting the jumpers in place on the box, will need to do something a bit more permanent, but for the price it's a winner.

As someone who has earned their living from hardware and software development in the past, I have to point out that these devices are clones of the real kit and their prevalence is crippling Saleae.

You might argue that they should have protected their IP better, but these are counterfeit devices and I would urge you not to buy them.

Whilst the forum does not have an explicit policy on promoting counterfeits, I doubt that anyone here wants that to happen.

Just because a door is left open, you don't have to walk through it.

EDIT: I have spoken with some of the guys at Saleae, and they've confirmed that these counterfeits are gen #1 devices, i.e. quite old - they are in the process of changing their software to prevent them working in the future. There are 15 staff and the owners/developers have spent 3 years of their lives developing this product.

While the Salaea guys deserve to make a living, a simple 8 channel logic analyser is virtually a commodiy item now, not the $399+VAT that they charge. This item is not a ripoff of Saleae:

Saleae state that the value is in their software. Big mistake in not licensing that, but doesn't justify in any way counterfeiting the hardware and then using their software.

Regardless of anyone's opinion on how much they charge, this is wrong.

Again, that's not the question here - if you don't think it's worth the $399, then buy a different product, don't buy a Saleae counterfeit and use their s/w.

I like what Saleae have done, but I'm not a customer - I use the Analog Discovery for this sort of stuff.

This is a circular discussion. I hope we all agree that counterfeit products and misuse of IP is not something we want here - I'll close the thread.
