tuning cord

Is there a replacement tuning cord for a Hacker Aviemore radio? Or a suitable substitute, the one on my radio has frayed and snapped.

The stringing diagram shows a different tuning wheel than mine, an updated diagram would be very much appreciated.

I'm sure there are sources of more appropriate cord but if you happen to have any to hand then fishing line is a surprisingly good substitute.

Ordinary fishing line (mono filament) is difficult to tie and wont grip the drive spindle, braided fishing line would work.

But the waxed twine is very good, it is available in various colours and thickness's.

I use the cheap nylon line. You are correct in saying pretty much everybody uses braided due to the shaft. The snag is I was looking at 18 quid a reel of braided wire. Whereas the nylon was a quid a reel. Suffice it to say I experimented a lot to try and get the cheap fishing line to work. I tried dummy drives using shaft and small weights. I had some headaches with it. Finally I did get the cheap fishing line to work and it has a 30 pound tension capacity. Like the OP I too found the schematic didn't match what I actually had before me (an extra guide cog). Actually this mechanism I did with fishing line turns a corner and runs via 4 or so front pulleys plus the tuner shaft (which I modified). Other alternatives people used is kite string. Some claim Bob's tuning chord is pretty authentic. All I can add is it can be damned hard to string a dial chord from zero.

Rubber sleeving on the tuning shaft was how I managed to use clear line. I had a very tight sleeve and this gripped the line. Sensitivity was fine. It's fiddly to thread through the pulleys but very fine for a knot. However the angle of the pull on the main drive wheel is a factor on the mechanism I am working on. Otherwise a guide wheel can push the chord off.

Try some vintage Philips sets - without the manual! The two cord variety - or sometimes one cord, one wire - will drive you insane!

Guaranteed that when you think you've cracked it, the tuning pointer goes in the wrong direction!

That's why I am seeking alternatives to dismantling my German radio. If I can solder around it will save restringing. It's very cleverly done, though. Small plastic pulleys with grooves and FM drive. Whereas my 50's set just has a very large drive wheel and then the whole chord has to turn from side to front as it runs through. I bought a bag of springs and may try and modify the design a bit.

Today, I restrung the dial cord of the Pye 69A battery radio set using the waxed polyester cord recommended by Mike (Crackle) Absolutely perfect for the job.
