Hello Mark,
It was easier to do than I thought. The only thing I had reflashed before was a Grundig GB1 set top box that had almost unusable original firmware. It used RS232 interface and what I think was a null modem cable. Again quite easy to make up but was a bit more of a faff to use. I would say if you are going to case yours I would leave building it until you've done the upgrade as you'll have to take it apart to bridge the jumpers. This I know to my cost. Good luck with it.
