Bit annoyed with customs!!

Hi All,
I've just got home to find what i thought was a wage slip from parcel force! I've discovered that i've been stung for import VAT for an ebay purchase of a vintage dublier cap tester from the US - £21.16 too (£13.16 import VAT and £8.00 clearance fee).

What a bl**dy cheek. Is there anything I can do about it.

I thought that VAT didn't apply to second hand goods, athough it might apply to the P&P as that's a service.

Hi Rob,

I expect you'll find you're stuck with the VAT. It's the £8 that strikes me as a diabolical imposition: I've understood it to be a collection fee levied by the Post Office, and it applies to anything costly enough (the threshold was £18, I think I've heard it's dropping to £15) to be subject to the tax. In my case a box of CDs, value £20, attracted first VAT and then £8 on top, by which time it wasn't nearly such a bargain as it had appeared to be. Would be interesting to hear a defence of the practice of charging eight quid every time they collect a few pounds in tax on behalf of Customs...

Old or new it can attract import fees. Before you buy anything check out this site: http://www.dutycalculator.com/ and then factor in what the duty could be before you buy.
