Another day, another 'scope and more..

I was glad to find the gadget made with synchro resolvers during my visit to Birkett's It appears they are all fed with the same gearing so I removed one to use externally. Today I tested it by feeding 400 Hz AC current into the rotor and connecting the stators to the simple oscilloscope X and Y inputs, all seems ok and makes nice patterns when I spin the shaft, see here for a brief video: https://youtube.com/shorts/LKpixFuql5E
The test setup will be useful for the new resolver simulation I'm building. This simple oscilloscope is easier to put into X-Y mode than my main 'scope since that needs a plugin module position swap to do this. D

Today I've been looking through some old photographs and found this one which I thought was lost. It shows a younger me in my bedroom in around 1970. A 19 set is on the desk, I can just make out an ex military CRT display unit which was my first homemade oscilloscope. The unit on the bed is a variable frequency HF VF oscillator with a couple of 807 valves. An interesting multiband radio is on a box in the corner of the room. A home-made multimer is on the floor. I used to have a long wire aerial going out the window and down the garden to a guyed mast. It used to spark a bit in a rainstorm. Brought back a lot of memories, David.

It's a miracle.

My bedroom had a Hartley 13A oscilloscope on a home made scope trolley (that still survives to this day unlike the 13A it carried).

They get everywhere. Loose solder blobs are frustrating but it's the ones that are burnt in which are the real problem. In my workroom I endevour to track down all the clippings which escape as it is upstairs and I am barfoot at night. I find that those little plastic clothes label ties sharp enough let alone stiff wire.

I found a negative in a recycled envelope in my box of photos, the envelope has a 3d stamp on it dated 6 APR 1960. The photo  shows the cracks which appeared near the doors in the prototype EE Deltic. Dad who worked for EE in the mechanical engineering laboratory was asked to investigate what had caused the problem and supply a solution. He said he'd never been subject to such loud noise as when he was travelling in the engine bay during testing.

   

This other picture shows an office scene at EE, here some engineers are working on a nuclear power reactor design. I think the man sat down is my Dad's friend 'uncle' Bernard.
