I also spoke to him for the last time a few years ago, by then he had left the BVWS else he may have got an obit in the Bulletin.
The valve tester article was a great day getting all the photos done, no way could I have done it. It needed someone with real skill with a camera and that was Carl Glover our previous BVWS Editor. My wife and I collected him early one morning and drove down to where Denis lived. Then we acted as porters whilst Carl fired away and it was all done by lunch time so off to the local pub for a good lunch and a pint.
Denis was delighted with the article and said winning a best article award gave him more pleasure than anything he had been awarded in his school days and banking career.
Later when he packed in electronics he asked if I would like to buy up his collection of valves and I did for a very reasonable price. But this also included me buying him and his wife lunch at the same pub so I got my own back there.
