It is a potential source of failure. Note that whilst the associated 470Ω resistor is rated at 5W, no rating is given for the pot!
Note also the 1Ω resistor at the earthy end. Obviously there to perform the same function as the 1Ω resistor in that nasty adaptor - yet another reason to get rid of it!
Another oddity: the 470Ω resistor is marked "change value for optimum bias", so why would you need the pot as well?
