Really, this is a question for Chris.
He's presumably made the decision to install a Wordpress plug-in to control access geographically - of which there are many, it transpires. I can certainly understand why a forum owner would want to do so - of the new member applications we get, somewhere between 50% and 90% are spammers (it varies from day to day). Presently, it's no hardship to filter them out, but if the volume was to rise significantly then that might change.
Even if one makes it through occasionally, the first few posts of any new member are under moderation, so spam postings are never seen here. From memory, the worst a spammer was ever able to do was to add a signature which contained a link to the website he was promoting - which luckily wasn't anything more distasteful than a painting and decorating service IIRC.
I'd really rather not have a discussion about the various ways to get around geoblocking.
