The scope has been reliable since Mark waved his magic wand but the work dismantling it to get to the faulty parts was very involved, finished up with the timebase switch outside the chassis connected with at least 30 temporary wires whilst the main pcb was fixed. And you can't get to both sides of the pcbs at the same time!
For the use you will give to a scope it would be lower on the list of desirables than a simple signal generator but if the budget is there go for both. Used scopes go for peanuts at radio auctions, but avoid the complicated ones.
Buying on the web and having them shipped is a bad idea, the banging about that a scope would get can destroy the tube.
Put a wanted ad on here and I'm sure a forum member not far from you will have something of use.
