I sometimes wonder if the discoveries came before the explanations. The very early crystal radios were made by soldiers in the war. I imagine there was a lot of trial and error to get things to work. Later theoretical explanations developed. The main thing is the tap can create oscillation and it wouldn't surprise me if that was discovered by trial and error too.
