Glad to hear you're making progress NM, remember my tip on coating the spring contacts with petroleum jelly after cleaning (plain Vaseline), it has the property of flowing away from mechanical pressure to allow good contact while preventing further oxidation. Don't overdo it though.
Getting one of these sets working well is very worthwhile, the performance is excellent from what is intended to be a set for domestic listening. I guess in use in rural Russia, a radio with good sensitivity would be essential as your "local" stations may be a very long way away.
