The resistive element only covers slightly less than the travel of the wiper. there is a brass half ring which the wiper travels onto. The element former itself is tapered, with the wire widely spaced at the thin end of the taper and becoming closer wound as it gets to the thick end of the taper.. It seems to have been made for a logarithmic law.
A 20k wirewound pot element would probably get me by but the control would not be so good. Did they make logarithmic wirewound pots.
I suspect the control has been looked at before, there are signs that the wire to the moving vanes of the condenser has been changed, a long long time ago with now cracked rubber insulated wire.
