F J is well respected and believe it or not was a personal friend of my Dad, his brother Sydney worked with my Dad on aircraft design (Dad was an aeronautical design draughtsman)
F J was also the editor for many mags from motoring to mechanics.
I digress though. Late 20's and early 30's TRF sets did in fact follow very similar circuitry, there were a few that would use anode bend detectors but these were the ones that would have good short wave coverage. The big disadvantage of the leaky grid detector is the way it loads the tuned circuits and it's distorted audio, the advantage is it's amplification at RF and AF. On a regenerative leaky grid stage component values are just about universal, there is often an RF stage with a pentode and an output triode, these can be battery or mains sets with a humdinger circuit.
