Personally I'd simply be removing all the audio capacitors on a set that age and replacing them. Therefore, the WD40 will work fine if Mike wants to simply make out the lettering. He'd be removing the part anyway although maybe he'll decided to stuff it with the new one if he chooses to try and keep it original.
I found WD40 works incredibly well for deciphering letters on wax capacitors. You do have to be gentle though or it will scrape off.
The book also I highly recommend by F J Cam as it was written at the very time these battery TRF's were being made. It describes tests done with very simple AvoMinors or even bulbs and LT batteries. Also you get a in depth run-down of the typical capacitor values in the TRF's.
Having said all that, I'm sure Mike will have fun with this and hope he keeps posting on his progress. Would be great to see this running again.
