In the 60s there were a lot of valved PA amplifiers - many of them made by Grampian - with high impedance inputs. Low impedance microphone matching transformers were a rarity.
Look at all those nice Reslo ribbon mikes beloved by pop groups the length and breadth of the country - all configured for high impedance output to match the valve amplifiers in use at the time.
I'm quite sure that there were professional PA systems that used low impedance microphones but they were swamped by the sheer enormity of the amateur/semi-pro market at the time.
