I think it's a "horses for courses" thing; the cheapo DMM's are very often entirely adequate for lots of work, and I like to leave the Avo 8 to one side, preserving it for when it's really needed. I have a pair of DMM's bought in Maplin's bargain bin for £4.99 about 20 years ago which are still functional but slightly "worn and torn". My favourite budget price meters are the UNI-T brand, though I did accidentally kill one while testing a scope EHT transformer while experiencing a "senior moment"
