I do have a plan to deal with all the rear-mounted connectors that I need access to. I dismissed the idea of adding individual plates directly to the gear because of the added space it would take; instead, I plan to mount a 1U panel under a shelf, and that will hold 24 BNC barrels - I have loads of these already, all nice insulated-from-the-chassis types. I just need to get around to doing it. Indeed, I already have a 2U and a 3U version up in the attic, but these would take far too much space. They are called CTPs in the broadcast trade - Connector Termination Panels - and would be used at the rear of a bay for all the inputs and outputs to that particular bay.
The only minor worry is that some gear might not appreciate having unterminated cables hanging off the back. And, keeping the labelling up to date as I shuffle kit around might be a pain.
For the larger, much deeper items, this problem has been solved by the design of my bench. The deep stuff is on a high shelf, and that section of the bench is open to the rear. The whole bench is on castors, so you can simply walk around to the back. Eventually, I'll get around to starting a thread about it - it's quite neat
I have some Racal stuff from that era as well. It's very diverse in quality terms - not surprising given how big and sprawling the company was. All good, though.
