Hi,
A good question Robin and one asked many times when it comes to patching veneer.
I like veneering but I dislike patching veneer because it is very difficult to make patches blend in.
You think the veneer to be oak? A few thoughts spring to mind with this limited information; what kind of oak; English; French; American; red or white how was the veneer cut to expose the grain;

Is it stained; is it grain filled and what finish has been applied?
How much patching is required and is the remaining veneer securely attached?
I'm certainly not trying to put you off Robin in fact I would encourage you to have a go because veneering is very interesting. Could you please expand a bit more and perhaps add a picture or two because this is such a common problem?
