What is marquetry and what veneering?
Here's a few pics from Sorrento ... this shop doing the first has been in the business for over 160 years. Its much practised in Italy and the fashion is to finish in ultra clear very high gloss lacquer.
I was surprised that the wood pieces were only paper thin.
Now here's a radio. Veneering or marquetry?
It uses different veneer for sides and front. Into the front is cut 3 separated bands, of a different wood, with the grain going the opposite way that go right around the sides. But they still did more: all around the decorative grill is another veneer insert. This is using the same wood as the banding.
To me its very subtle and beautifully carried out with all the joins tight. How they churned them out in mass production we will never know. Film exists of the belt lines making the chassis and components back then but I have never found one of the cabinet shop. Shame!
