The construction is a classic 'proof of concept' / prototype: all my D-I-Y electronics projects start that way - and end that way!
For one reason or another, I have never explored the D-I-Y printed circuit board route, relying instead on traditional tag-strip, Veroboard (and similar) and point-to-point wiring. But then again, all my 100% home-brew projects are, by definition, one-offs. Now if something like this was to be submitted as a project in a magazine such as Practical Witless, a pukka pcb etc. would be called for. But it isn't: build costs, reliability and ease of prospective maintenance take a priority in the design and construction of my home-brew one-offs.
