The 'Magic eye': Lawrence is correct (of course): there is also the EFM1 (L.F. amplifier and tuning indicator in one glass envelope). There is also the ME6-S: both 6.3-v. heater; both assigned to 'Tungsram' in my reference book.

Pin-outs, EFM 1:
1 = h
2 = Metallising
3 = anode
4 = grid 2
5 = grid 1
6 = target
7 = cathode
8 = heater

Pin-outs, ME6-S:
1 = h
2 = No connection
3 = anode
4 = target
5 = grid
6 = No connection
7 = cathode
8 = heater

I have not been able to identify any other 'magic eye' / tuning indicator valves that have a side-contact base.

This magic eye is wired with no connection on pin 5 (per valve base)

Are we counting the pins in the same sequence? Looking underneath the valve-holder, there are 4 pins that are clustered close together. The left-hand one of the central pair I call pin 1, and then count clockwise, ending with the right-hand one of that same central pair: pin 8.

If all else fails, I think a sketch of the wiring - which pin connects to whatever - will be the best way of performing a promising analysis. All 'magic eyes' have a control grid: there must be a connection to it . . . somewhere.
