£8.00 in 1963 equates to £130 today:

£130 many not seem too out of reach today, but even accounting for inflation wages are far higher now in real terms than they were back in the 1960s. EG, the UK minimum wage for an adult today is £6.08 per hr - £240 for 40 Hrs. Not a lot to fund a modern life style, but it would have done nicely back in '63, when it would have equated to £15.00, so the Nombrex would have been half a week's wages.
One of the things I find surreal about the changing value of money is that I still think a five-pound note has real value, because if I got two in a pay packet and some small change I thought I was doing well, but really, it's become small change, equivalent to 31p in 1963 - enough to buy a magazine, or maybe two cups of coffee.
Oh crikey, I've become one of those boring old farties who forever bang on about "I remember when I was a lad..."
Sorry about that.
