What the trigger does is make sure that the same point on a waveform is triggered every time, or else you'ld have trouble reading it. So, a trigger point is related to the waveform itself, well the Y or vertical part of it.
There is a knob on the front which you use to set the point at which the scope triggers. look here to see if the waveform is reaching it and look back.
