I'd start by finding out which board does the horizontal sweep. There is a control at the front which controls horizontal sweep time, give this a clean and see if there are any volts on it.
This control, which normally consists of a multiposition switch and a potentiometer also can turn off the horizontal sweep in most cases, so you can then feed in horizontal drive from something else.
Wires from this control will lead you back to the horizontal timebase circuit. Then it goes to the coils so the spot on the front can move. The way to check it is to see if the volts are reaching the board and then get another scope out to trace the faulty board through.
Don't let the screen keep displaying a spot by the way, as the tube might get burnt in the process.
Cheers,
Steve P.

If we've always had that, why is the car boot open? You aren't smuggling in another old TV are you...?
