Right, big caps replaced so I don't have to worry about any 'grenades' going off! The beast powers up and has the same problem with the sweep so now I can start the serious troubleshooting part.
One of the replacement caps was too small to have a physical mount so I resorted to some hot glue - looks OK though. The main centre one was almost the same diameter as the original so was able to use the same mounting bracket. The two other ones came with end cap mounting nut/bolt and isolation plates so I removed the original brackets and drilled out one of the holes on each side to 10mm and that's all it took.
