The original mains socket was a Bulgin one - they weren't very substantial compared to the IEC one that you've replaced it with. The female plugs which mated with the socket were a bit flimsy too, and IMHO the cable restraint wasn't really up to mains standard, so I think you've done the right thing there.
Best of luck with sourcing the el caps for the PSU!
