My comment was of course based on bitter experience. It's a case of 'It's just a quick job so it will be OK'. I bet Col's done it
It's surprising how many chucks seem to survive with only their outside jaws. The good news about belt driven lathes, especially flat belt ones, is that with a bit of luck the belts slip before any real damage is done.
