Such a simple answer - apparently - but how many people would be capable of conceiving the idea? It ought to be obvious to any onlooker that thinking of this nature indicates a high level of intelligence, yet today's schools examination system gives little credit for such a useful and transferrable ability (and historically never has in the UK). Climbing down from the hobby horse, what a neat and logical answer, David. I guess it shows also that we should never throw things away, even red coathangers!
