I expect you'll find you're stuck with the VAT. It's the £8 that strikes me as a diabolical imposition: I've understood it to be a collection fee levied by the Post Office, and it applies to anything costly enough (the threshold was £18, I think I've heard it's dropping to £15) to be subject to the tax. In my case a box of CDs, value £20, attracted first VAT and then £8 on top, by which time it wasn't nearly such a bargain as it had appeared to be. Would be interesting to hear a defence of the practice of charging eight quid every time they collect a few pounds in tax on behalf of Customs...
