Thanks guys, I'm pleased to have an AVO - even if it is a later model. It's got a note inside saying the batteries were last replaced in 1990 - time to replace them I guess. I'll have a look inside the TE-20D in case anything needs replacing. I've got the modern gear so I guess I'm back-filling to have test gear more appropriate to the age of the radios.
