A well loved health and safety nightmare. I bet your mum loved going in there to clean up 

And extract all the solder blobs and wire clippings from the carpet.

They get everywhere. Loose solder blobs are frustrating but it's the ones that are burnt in which are the real problem. In my workroom I endevour to track down all the clippings which escape as it is upstairs and I am barfoot at night. I find that those little plastic clothes label ties sharp enough let alone stiff wire.
