Best Woodworm Treatment

I can't be bothered to look for the receipt but I think the bad was bought n 1948; it must be around then as it's got a Utility Mark on it.

I think there is something in the idea of wood-worm being fussy eaters. I've got some rough old tools in a drawer in the shed. he drawer bottom is riddled but the sides aren't touched and neither are the tool handles, the shed itself or other timber that's stored in there. I would re-new this bottom but I think while they're enjoying that they're leaving everything else alone.

Trevor its funny you say about HMV being worst for the problem as its a HMV radio which I have got a problem with worm, its currently eminating sawdust so I can asume still active so I have it done up in a black bag just in case

Has anybody heard of a type of treatment which was used on house timbers, and had the consistancy of mayo. It was put on with a trowel and left for a couple of days for the timber to soak it in then the excess wiped off.
I would be worried about using it in case it affected the sets finish???

March arrived and then the "flight of the beetles" started with a vengeance, the set was put outside but the strength of the cabinet was compromised again. I gave up with it and gave it away. I believe it has been burned now and the electronics kept for spares.
HMV are the worst sets for the problem but allegedly its to do with the animal glue.

Yes, my two problem cabinets were HMVs. When I followed the instructions on the can of woodworm killer it didn't work. This is when I adopted my over the top approach - it takes time but it works for me. Treat very very thoroughly, bag up and leave, treat again very thoroughly, bag up and leave. I do let the cabinet breath one the treatment is over before refinishing or bringing back into the house. I know the two cabinets I treated this way were "live" but this cured them completely. There is no point in refinishing a cabinet if more holes are likely to appear!

I was just wondering if a microwave oven could be used to cook woodworm in smaller cabinets. I suppose there will be hidden nails or screws though so its probably too dodgy.

Woodturners sometimes use a microwave oven to reduce the moisture content of timber. (Not the one in the kitchen, which could at best cause a 'domestic' and at worst, be grounds for divorce! but a cheap old one - even cheap new ones cost as little as £35.00 or so). Timber can be likened to a bunch of straws, and even if apparently dry, will have some moisture content, so the power level and duration of the microwave oven have to be carefully considered. Rather than prattle on about the technique, there's an interesting article at the link below which has some relevance, albeit I appreciate that this thread isn't about drying timber, but killing larvae, if indeed they're actually in residence, which is doubtful. The point I'm making - though perhaps not very clearly - is that if you put a wooden radio cabinet in a microwave oven, the law of unintended consequences might come into play due to the moisture content of the timber, in that microwaves are designed to heat up anything that has moisture content. That includes timber as well as bugs!

Having turned on the microwave, it might be a wise precaution to hide behind the sofa till it switches off!

I did the chemical and bag treatment on this P53 but in the end threw the cab out and built a new one. Before I veneered the new one I treated the plywood with chemicals that ostensibly prevent them getting started in the first place. Fortunately the air is nice and dry where I live so hopefully I won't be seeing any of those nasty holes any time soon.

I really think that case was beyond redemption.
The replacement looks wonderful.
The case looks very similar to the P35 and T19D, although they don't have that 'foot' round the bottom.
