I just bought one of these on eBay. As mentioned in other forums the build quality is not great and at least one of the valves has lost vacuum. So, it will be a while before I'll be using this in anger.

Now that the Minerva is playing away happily I thought I'd have a look at the 950A. First impressions are not good (to say the least) so this may end up being used for parts. The mains transformer has clearly had problems because there are two transformers installed - both wired up! There are two rectifier valves fitted and the overall build quality is really poor. It also looks like it is heavily modified versus the original drawing so apart from stripping ti down and starting over I'm not sure how viable this instrument would be.

I'll hunt around to see if I can find a transformer. If not I suspect this one is unlikely to make it's way back to life. However, no point in deciding in haste. All suggestions welcome on this one.

Well it looks like I found a suitable transformer from a supplier in Sweden. It's expensive but one doesn't have too many options when it comes to finding suitable t/f's for this type of project. So, I've completely stripped the thing down to the metal bits and will rebuild from scratch. Fortunately the t/f mounts reasonably centrally so weight distribution should be OK - and I keep the original hole for the rectifier valve socket. I beefed up the magic eye mount as it was very flimsy. I added a strengthening strip underneath the t/f since so many holes had been drilled there before. Lastly I've added a pair of tag strips for the main components. I plan to wire it up as per the original 950A except the power supply which will be the 950B version. All the original components are junked except the close tolerance resistors mounted on the selector switch. So far so good.
