My aerovox 75 - a sorry tale

Hi All,
This is my Aerovox 75 as it arrived by airfreight from the USA. I'm in dispute with the seller at present!

Judging by how much packagine my AVO had from Mark (Thanks Mark! ) That is literally none!!
I suppose luckilt it's the wood that broke so it could be glued?

Unfortunately its a case of yes and no to glueing!
When the case broke it did not split along the glued sections but all over the place. In glueing it back together (which I have now done) there are some nasty splits that show and will need to be specially filled and coloured to match back in.

The sender didn't do me any favours - the box it was sent in had 3 sheets of brown paper and NO other packing.

The AVO had piles of those puffy envelopes, lots of bubblewrap, brown paper, bags full of air, solid box and everything!

I had a valve come in a lavatory roll middle in a jiffy bag. Given that it leaked like a sodding tap I wish it HAD got smashed.:badmood:

It isn't just amateur e-Bay sellers but the shops and other mail order businesses who should really know better and I often wonder how things have survived the journey.

I hope you get things sorted out, Rob. Fixable it may be but if you'd wanted a wooden jigsaw you'd have bought one.

Nasty

I was once sent two 50s bakelite sets in the same box with no packaging etc and both with plugs on and they arrived in perfect condition. Similarly I've had sets in boxes stuffed with packing only to arrive smashed.

I expect with that thing having to travel over the North Atlantic Ocean it's been chucked around by all sorts of people. Of course it is the vendor's job to make sure it is packed properly for the worst eventualities.

Miraculously, it looks as though the electrics, the meter and the valves have survived the journey, and disheartening though it is, the cabinet should be repairable to its original pre-damaged condition. Personally, I'd use 'Tightbond' which has fast tack and is extremely strong. Though it's light yellow in colour, it sets clear and if clamped, glue lines are invisible. If you have any cracks, if the wood is gently flexed to open the crack slighlty, you can rub Tightbond into the crack, let it close up, clean off any surplus, and cramp the wood till the glue sets.

Hope your dispute with the vendor is resolved to your satisfaction Rob.

So disheartening, and so unnecessary.
