Picking up on your comment about military equipment not needing to be long-lasting, and taking the 1154 and 1155 as examples, I don't think there was anything in their construction that detracted from their life-span. Indeed I suggest their components were largely 'bog standard' types as used in domestic radios! Conversely the American equivalents such as the BC348 were, in my opinion, built to a much higher standard and generally used better quality components. But whether this gave any benefit in practice given the short life of the aircraft is questionable?
It's a very interesting subject which probably deserves a thread of its own!
