Thanks for letting us know. New name definitely better as it reflects the international content of the site. Huge amount of UK stuff there.

The site is a tremendous resource for all of us. A real contribution to the online library of human knowledge.

I'm amazed that nobody has had a go at them for copyright infringement. While the copyright owners are unlikely to care about old issues of Practical Wireless etc some of the books, such as Briggs, are still available new.

Some copyright owners, such as Getty Images, are very pro-active about chasing infringement. Ruth, my partner, once wrote a book review and used an picture of the front cover. This would have been covered anyway by normal review and fair dealing provisions but she got explicit permission from the publisher. She got a nastygram from Getty Images. The book cover included an image that they owned. I think she told them where to go and they didn't bother her again.

I certainly wasn't willing to pay 'Silicon Chip' AUD $10 for a six page article over fifty years old so managed to find it 'elsewhere'.

So it looks like the the site has suffered some copyright problems. It's possible that the wayback machine has archived the entire site.

I too have come across that copyright infringement and also wonder just how many people would spend money to buy information which is effectively obsolete. I did look into 'copyright' some while ago with regard to some around 100 year old photos  with regard to doing paintings from them, but got very confused. I know a magazine is a collection of  works from different writers who relinquish control, at least to some extent, to the magazine company, but there are other times when a book author's copyright gets taken over by the estate controllers of  the original writer? It's about time things were clarified and simplified to a fixed date or something for everything.

Last year I was teaching a navigation course for my local Ramblers, and wanted to use images from the Mountain Training "Hillwalking" handbook. They have a copyright notice in the book. So I phoned them, and they said absolutely no problem - send us a tenner and we'll send you a CD of all the images in the book to use in your course.

Now of course this is a current publication, and is the bible for navigating and walk leadership in hill and moorland terrain. But would I pay that for an article from the 1950's and 1960's? Absolutely not.

Thank-you for that kind offer but I've already managed to find a copy of the magazine (issue 6) in part of an online archive.

Getty Images take public domain images and claim they own them. Though most of the stuff they have is copyright.
