Recalcitrant Knobs

I've just been handed a Vidor CN41 by my pal who wants me to have a look at it.

One thing I was concerned about was getting the knobs off. Obviously jamming a screw-driver under them would be to invite disaster, and would probably damage the case even if the knobs survived, and they also looked a bit too delicate to stand the usual string/thin wire trick so I needed a different method.

I stuck an old bank card under each side and then slid others under those. After that it was a case of pushing more between these two until the knobs popped off which they did undamaged.

I thought this may of use to other people, though I'm sure somebody else will have already thought of it.

The only use for Bank Cards! All mine are Grub Screw knobs so i'm ok (So far)

I use a car trim removal tool with a piece of plastic sheet to protect the escutcheon. Although I didn't need to use that method on a Philips set I recently cleaned the knobs on. They were attached with a method I've never seen before. There is an external nylon grub screw covering a brass knob retention screw which threads right through the control spindle !

The Philips 'screw right through the spindle' ploy is one I've come across with pre-1930s Philips sets. A true puzzle until you work out quite what's going on, but that's Philips for you - or rather, it was in the early days.

Thats interesting. The set I found this quirk on is a 1960's model ! Namely a B4G01U. This set also has another quirk, tuning is not via a vaned tuning cap ! I do love Philips stuff, they have a dislike of convention !
