Circuit Diagram needed

Hi all,
I am very new to this forum and also new to old valve radio restoration. I have recently acquired a Defiant MSH 555 that needs some work done to it but have been unsuccessful in locating any information regarding this model. I believe that the Defiant range were marketed by the Co-Op in the 50's. I have seen several Defiant models circuit diagrams but none that match the MSH 555 model. Anybody that could supply me with the relevant circuit diagram/ service manual, would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Barry.

Sorry I can't find a circuit for your Defiant.

However if you search the forum under 'Books & Literature' you'll find 'The Story of Defiants' which explains how and why the Co-Op movement came to market radios under that brand name. Basically, as an act of defiance when the radio manufacturers tried, but failed, to bring the Co-Op to heel to try to stop them paying dividend to Co-Op member as this was seen by the makers as a form of discount on the retail price. 

The manufacturers had wrongly assumed that if they refused to supply the Co-Op with radios, the Co-Op would capitulate. The makers hadn't forseen the possibility that the Co-Op would introduce its own range of radios, from which Plessey and Brimar did very nicely. Every Defiant radio sold by the Co-Op was a lost sale to other radio makers so it turned out to be a massive own goal. Just one of a number of monopolistic and anti-competitive practices by radio and valve manufacuers in the 1930s.

The Co-Op was also banned from exhibiting at the Radio Show as that show was arranged by radio manufacturers.

As you are already finding, you will be very hard pressed to find a circuit diagram/service sheet for any Defiant set. This is because the Co-Op never intended the information to be released to the general public - during the serviceable lifetime of the sets, repairs were only carried out in Co-Op service shops.

There are  some circuit diagrams about that have leaked out for a limited few Defiant models, but for the vast majority they are simply non-existent now - presumably having been destroyed en masse by the Co-Op when they stopped producing their own sets many years ago.
