Bit of a controversial subject but I thought my experience over the last of year or so, may inform others.

How much does it really cost to run an electric car?

I have been running a PHEV since 2018 but went fully Electric in June 2023.

When working out running costs for EV's it tends to be easiest to work out Pence per mile rather than MPG.

So lets start with a reasonable comparison a similar size vehicle I owned between 2014 and 2018 my Honda CRV 1.6 Diesel ( a really great vehicle).

It averaged about 60MPG even with me driving.

Current Diesel price assume £1.336 /L or more or less £6 per gallon.

At that rate forgetting all other costs 10P per mile.

EVs its all down to Pence/KW

My car does around 4 Miles/KW and if I charge at home off peak using Smart charging is 7p per KWH (Octopus)

That gives me less than 2p per mile.

If I go on a long trip and have to use public charging then I can expect anywhere up to 75p/KWH

Tesla superchargers are much cheaper at typically 40p/KWH or 10P/Mile

If you take the overall over a period of time most journeys I don't need the public network so overall its around 3.5p per mile in the last 12 moths including a trips to Glasgow, March(Cambridgeshire), Southampton and 2 trips to St Helens

I have a home charger Tesla Wall Charger 7.6 KW

The Octopus scheme try's to achieve you're set limit so I get a minimum of 5 hours but often as many as 7 hours at 7.6 KW/H.

Along with Service periods being typically 50'000 miles+ once you get over the purchase price EV's can be very cheap to run.

Tonight my car will only charge for less than 1 hour as that's all that's needed top it up.

Cheers

Hello Chaps.

For a while I've been considering getting something different to potter with. I had many ideas from an Austin 7 to my old friend a rear engined Skoda. I even pot in a few £20 shots on Retroshite to no avail.
Our friend Bob Howe though told me of a Lomax 224 on Ebay, it was sitting at £1609 when I looked I bidded late and won it for £1659.
The car was in Wigan and had been in a dry garage for 5 years.
The seller had fitted new plugs recently, changed the oil and filter, fitted a new petrol tank and fuel lines.
The problem was getting it here with shiply looking for over £1000. A stroke for luck came about that the seller could get it on a return tractor shipment to Annan which is 88 miles to me.

I Collected the car on Saturday, no breakdowns but performance was way down. New points, valve clearances now adjusted and exhaust leaks sorted have cured the low power.
A lot of wiring to redo but its brilliant fun. Has the Visa 652cc engine and a 5 speed box from the GSA rather the 602cc and four speeds..

In my opinion the car is only worth scrap value ( Not over 30K that they so called expert valued at ) and not legal on UK roads and if you could legally get insured and if involved in a claim and heaven forbid if someone got hurt in an accident the insurance would not pay out . Before I retired as a mechanic / Mot Tester I would refuse to test it on safety grounds and believe me I would find some thing to justify to refuse not to test it .kind regards Bob

The regenerative braking thread has shown just how wedded we are to our cars and how resistive we are to change.

Like Many here I started driving in the 1970's ( I know that some here it would be even earlier the 50's and 60's) in what were essentially 1950/60's cars.

Mechanically and Electrically these cars by modern standards were pretty simple you could get them moving by stealing one of your wife's stockings clearing the jets in the carb or cleaning the sparkplugs all with simple tools.

In the last 20 years cars have become massively inundated with electronics, expensive and often not user serviceable parts.

I was maintaining our cars up until the early noughties ( Avengers, Rovers, Mini's, Austin 1100's Vauxhall Chevettes, Cavaliers), although maintaining my wife's Cavalier GSI could be a struggle with the non re-usable stretch bolts and the tools needed to replace the tiny handbrake shoes in the rear hub all a challenge for the home mechanic.

When In 1999 I got my Mondeo ST200 and in 2003 my wife bought a new Corsa I pretty much threw in the towel.

Now we are in an era of flux alternative fuels such as hydrogen and EV.

It struck me that what we all consider the norm was alien to our forebears when the horseless carriage started to frighten the horses and change entire village town and city life.

Skills handed down of smithing, horsemanship, stabling and carriage making and repair were suddenly redundant.

And here we are again.

One of the worst things about EV cars is range anxiety and I am sure 100 years ago our forebears had the same issues. Where to get Fuel/Power on a long journey.

Not like a horse where you can turn it out into a field for a few hours, It'll never catch on!

This is one of the areas where Tesla has an acknowledged edge. The supercharger network there are 46 in Exeter alone.

This isn't an advert for Tesla, I would say as a car it's technically brilliant but as an (older) driver somewhat lacking in the things I have been accustomed to in the last 25 years.

I went out for a meal with my wife (my birthday) and on the way home I stopped off to charge the car as I am going to see an old friend tomorrow.

This is what it looks like for those interested.

.

I limited the charge to just over 60% when we arrived the battery was at 10%.

The charge started at 198KW rate and was already tapering when I took the pic.

The problem is Dorset for instance doesn't have any electricity ( With apologies to those Dorset born and breed) They chew straws and go about their business on horseback. Superchargers=0

So there you have it a change no more welcome that 100 years ago?

All constructive post and that includes anti EV providing its first hand not the usual tropes.

And yes EV's are still expensive but hopefully that will soon change.

Cheers

Cheers

Used a new car hire lot this time and got a Fiat 500. I really don't like it. Driving off at 11pm I had no idea what speed I was doing because the cluttered display is lit by orange light and the pointers are also orange. Also the car kept telling me to change up when I was in 5th and it could barely maintain speed in that gear. It's a petrol hybrid but surprisingly has a 6th gear. This morning I went shopping in the sun and discovered that it has a sun roof with a filter screen but it still lets in far too much sun. The screen should have been solid rather than perforated.

For the last few days I've been driving around in a hired Audi A3 40 TFSIe. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 6 speed DSG autobox. It has regenerative braking which is good but what I think is really bad is that it does very little energy recovery on the overrun (next to nothing in fact). Consequently if you want to charge the battery you have to lightly touch the brakes at every opportunity. No doubt giving the impression to drivers behind that you never learnt to drive properly.
The Ryhope Pumping station was built in 1868 to supply water to the Sunderland area and It was pumping water continuously till 1967. Now is in preservation and is a Grade 2 listed building and is now kept working by volunteers to keep the 2 100 horsepower engines and the Lancashire boilers running . A great piece of North East of engineering from R & Hawthorn in Newcastle kind regards Bob

We just arrived in Spain this afternoon and collected a car rather bigger than we wanted. It's a VW T-Cross. My first reaction was that it must have electric powered steering and the switching arrangement was faulty. Not impressive in a car with only 5000km on its clock. I noticed this as I changed lanes a few times and the effect was that it initially ignored my command and then suddenly and second or so later responded indelicately.

After a bit I noticed a little green synbol in the instrument panel consisting of two straight lines angled inwards at the top with another dotted vertical line in between them and it dawned on me that this was a deliberate "fault" to persuade me not to change lanes. I assume to wake me up if I wandered out of lane unintentionally. After reaching our destination I discoved that there appear to be two of these nanny state features. One called Lane Assist which I turned off and the other called Front Assist and it cautioned me not to turn that off and I'm not sure I know what it seeks to control.
A few people have said its theft and it does happen but when the car is presented for a MOT it a failure full stop no excuses will it pass mate no . A MOT tester would not pass a car with rotten brake pipes bald tyres play in ball joints so why would they pass a car with a removed DPF /Cat ? and if that car was involved in an accident the insurance would be void as no insurance company would insure you for a car with a modification like that kind regards Bob
