Anyone used one of these test units, I have one. It switches on/lights up and you can hear the relays. Not done much with it yet, I notice it has the input on the front for the matching Sig gen. Big unit but seems to work ok.
Anyone got any pointers or experience with the unit.
Will probably hook it up and see where we go with a little RF and gradually increase it, I believe they are 100w but have no paperwork.

Wonderful.

I've had a TM8 for many years.

Turned it on today: dead as a dodo.

Changed the fuse & powered up via The Big Green Light Box (fortunately).

It's a royal pain to dismantle and eventually once in bits turned out to be a shorted 1000uF reservoir capacitor.

Worked ok in bits.

Reassembled with difficulty and lo! suddenly it's very odd.

And then the Big Green Light Box lit up in approved fashion.

No idea what's wrong with the TM8 now, but I'd wager the mains transformer is shorted.

There's a HP3586C that would do the job I was attempting, but there's even less chance of that working than of fixing the TM8.

Also the 3586 is too big & heavy to shift.

Ho hum.

It was the FARS rally meeting at Sandtoft on Sunday, I look forward to it, there is usually a good selection of interesting electronic gear goar on sale there. This time was no exception and I came back with HP and Tektronics 100 MHz scopes, a video vector analyzer and waveform monitor and also this old piece of test equipment. As far as I can tell it is for testing three phase watt hour meters, made by an early player if this field - Chamberlin and Hookham of Birmingham. It caught my attention as it seems to have a three phase transformer in it which I thought could be useful or interesting. I've not found anything like it by searching online. I'm tempted to try and get hold of an old watt-hour meter to see if I can exercise it before abandoning it into a cornet of my shed but if anybody knows anything about these I would like to hear about it.

My other acquisitions are more interesting, I have a Tektronix 2236 'scope. This one has a built in DVM VFD display to measure input waveform properties and also conventional 4mm jack inputs to use it as a traditional DVM. A precursor to modern scopes with everything displayed on the screen. its mainly working now, I'm waiting for some replacement transistors to fix the vertical display. The HP scope is a 1740A, I cant get the timebase to trigger so a bit more manual reading needed to identify where the problem could lie. The vectorscope and monitor are working, Ive tested them on my colour bar generator - a RIFA cap inside gave up during this test put it hasn't caused any further damage - I'm glad I tested it in the shed though because it smelt awful.

I have owned this instrument from new (c1990) and it has always worked flawlessly. Until now. It's stuck in some kind of boot loop. It says "memory test" on screen for a few seconds, then boots to a normal display and is responsive to controls for about a second or two. Then goes back to the memory test. Rinse and repeat. I don't recall ever seeing the memory test screen before.

I have the original user and maintenance manuals as supplied. They don't contain schematics, not even a decent block diagram. There is a list of modules, their functions and a few photos showing their locations. Unlike many Tektronix manuals, there is no faultfinding guide.

Looking at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VhyDC1DTCk&t=36s it looks like there's a lithium thionyl chloride battery in there which is probably now dead. The manual mentions EEPROMs so it's not clear if calibration data is stored in battery backed RAM or not.

The Antex X25 thread reminded me of the couple of days I spent in work changing all the class Antex CS soldering iron leads to silicone.

I was prompted to do this my the discovery of several soldering irons that had just passed PAT testing (external firm) with melted leads.

I thought there was a requirement for some sort of inspection rather than just plugging the thing in a magic box & pressing a button.

But there you go.

The added advantage is that the silicone leads are much more flexible.

And it occupied an otherwise tedious couple of days during the summer vac when tumble weed might be viewed rolling along the corridors with the sound of a train whistle in the distance.

Hi all, I have been working on a faulty Farnell SSG 520 Signal Generator for a long-time. I have fixed lots of faults, but now stuck on the FM correction board. The fault flow chart says remove FM correction and if locks now the fault is on this board. Any ideas of where to look. I have checked voltages and test most of the IC's on this PCB.

I received this meter quite unexpectedly in the post yesterday. It belonged to my late uncle Norman.
I shall treasure it. It just needed a couple of 9 volt batteries to get it working.
Seems to be in good overall condition. I'll be comparing it a HP3478A which I have on loan.
