My local auction house, Ashley Waller in Cheshire, have a sale on Wednesday and Thursday, 1at and 2nd of July which includes a large number of radios, test equipment, parts, valves and TVs etc. There are radios from the 1930s up to the mid 1970s I reckon.
Mostly on the Thursday sale.

If anyone wants stuff from this sale, I can bid and uplift any item for them to collect from me later if they wish. Or they can buy on line and I can uplift and store for a short time for later collection. All lots have to be cleared by Monday.

There are some quite odd sets, along with the usual common ones.

I shall be inspecting most of the items on Thursday morning, if anyone want to know the condition of lots I shall be online at the sale. I can look but not be held responsible for condition, there are no warranties of course.

Just after WW2 I recall a stall holder in Shepherds Bush Market selling this rip off.
Cheap ex wireless equipment like capacitors could be bought for pennies
after the war. Some spark realised that they could be an aerial if plugged into the aerial socket of a radio. Just stick an impressive label on them
So this bloke had a stall with battery radio. To the amazement of those watching he would plug it in and hey Presto there was the Home Service loud and clear.
Many forked out 2/6 to buy one, and in the 1950s 2/6 was a great deal of money for the working man.
So this wireless con trick probably spread to all of UK.
Some of you very elders may recall some near you.

I said that I would never condone or work on one of these radios.
I regard them as a sad poor copy of the originals, made in China for a rock bottom price, a blatant copy of a much loved model, iconic for its time and still regarded as outstanding.

What is it?

Well, its the bent "U" retro copy Bush TR82.

Yes, one of those horrors, all plastic, next to no electronics inside and low, low quality I assumed.

For those that don't know, the Chinees got hold of a TR82 that had been heated, by sun presumably, and the "U" on the from had softened and sagged. So they faithfully copied it!
This example came to me very cheap, in fact free, as it came with another set that I wanted, I would never have gone out and bought one of these.

It was filthy but not scratched about and it worked just fine considering the lack of components ( I think the circuit is a basic 2 chip affair ) and the small cheap speaker.
The mains lead was present with the obligatory white emulsion spots, ( why do folk do this? ) and no signs of leaked PP9 battery inside. The handle was not even bent surprisingly and there was no damage due to it being dropped either.
The plastic wood grain finish is different, not very Bush, as is the white tuning dial. The extending aerial is whole and straight.
Having worked out how to take the back off, the normal big screw in the center but then it has to slide vertically to unhook, I found the inside to be very clean and undamaged. I doubt that anyone has ever opened this radio.
The filthy outside meant that it would have to come completely apart for a thorough soak and clean which involved taking out the mains power module, the main pcb and the speaker. The inner panel which is a large plastic moulding is held together in the front panel with lots of screws, I left the brown top panel with the holes for the knobs and buttons in place, it seemed to be stuck.
Taking the pcb out involved removing the reduction cord drives for the tuning and the tuning knob and pointer.
This cord arrangement is quite clever, two strings on one tuning drum to two different diameter pulleys on the tuning dial assembly gives the required slow motion tuning without any gears. It looked terrifying to restring so I photographed the lot and taped the cords to the pulleys before lifting them off. It all went back together easily then.
I changed the battery snap on connector to a small PP3 type so that it will take a 6 AA pack instead of the exorbitantly priced PP9.

So what about it as a radio? Well it works very well, reception on MW LW and FM is very good. The sound is OK considering.
Would I buy one for real money? No, but it did surprise me how well made it was and how well it works.

I'm currently making a multi-output 'eliminator' supply for battery radios, all linear of course for RFI reasons.

I'd like some digital voltmeters for bias, HT and screen outputs.
I ordered some from ebay and later aliexpress, which were rated 0-30V, 3-digit, for very little money (around a pound each).
I intended to use a multiplier to scale them to read 0-300V...but no luck. They're all auto-ranging, so for example 22V reads '22.0', 100V reads '100.' and 5V reads '05.0' so a multiplier or potentiometer reducer won't do.
They use a 5V auxilliary psu so they read right down to 0V.

Any suggestions where I can get some suitable ones? I've already cut the panel out for the autoranging ones.

I like valve amps, I have a few Heathkit. For a change I purchased a Rogers Cadet 3 with a few problems, rustling, pops, distortion.
I've done the useual, out of spec cap's, tested the valves and found a bad ecl86, cleaned the valve base's.
Couldn't find any criteria for the ecc807's so couldn't test (wonder why?). So put all back together and so far sounding sweet.
I tried to find more info on the ecc807's then I found out what you all know!!.
Assuming I'm going to keep the little jezebel and thinking if a 807 goes down, are there instructins as to converting
to take ecc83's?. I know it's not straight forward but she is a nice amp.

My still good and much liked Kindle is 12 to 13 years old. Amazon has been trying to get me buy new for some time. This started with cutting off buying from the device a few years ago. No problem, just purchase books on the PC and download them to the Kindle. But now, from the 20th, I wont be able to do that.

So I will have to get new one with touch and swipe screen which I'm not a fan of. The old has a keyboard, not used much but the buttons and other controls are which I will miss.

Have to do it as to me the Kindle is simply the best for reading for so many reasons. The old friend has been so reliable and easy. Guess I will miss it until I get used to a modern device.
