As a precursor to the (excellent) Radio Designer's Handbook, there's Basic Electronics, by Van Valkenburgh, Nooger and Neville. American books, extremely well written, I've just done a Google search and Amazon list them - but they're also online https://archive.org/details/BasicElectro...7/mode/2up.
First book is on power supplies, second amplifiers, third on Video Amps and Oscillators. All valve based - er, sorry, tube based, lots of illustrations, they were a great help in my formative years when physics teacher gave me Vol 1, 2, 3 as they were old-hat even then!
