The US often incorrectly calls fluorescent lamps, neons. I saw it in a recent UK authored book too. I just read it also in the last Raymond Chandler book, Playback, I read the other night. I had to look up the published date too as it had plastic top tables, dead jet test pilots, sonic booms and taxies with two way radio. Not expected in 1940s Detective Noir. It was 1958 and he died in 1959. The Big Sleep was his first in 1939.
