Hi.
Some Distros will set you as a "superuser" so while running the live disc as you haven't entered a user name and password then the system cant allocate you the necessary permissions so the HDD wont mount while running in live disc mode.
I think from memory going back to 17.1 did and oddly the latest 19 Tara did as well.
A thought for Al, if the laptop has a SATA 2.5 inch HDD I have a spare 160gig one here you can have FOC if you wish, I can even load it with 18.3 Sylvia and you can swap HDD's around on Linux without having to reinstall the OS.
