I've been hearing amateur radio is in conflict because the older Hams feel the newsters are passing simplifiedd exams and using the bands for chat. The newsters argue the older Hams are too stuck in tradition (purists) and not accepting change. Overall some argue Ham is struggling to attract members as internet makes it seem pointless. I can't really comment as to how many new Hams are learning valve theory and even code for CW. My impression is Ham did offer educational skills to the club members and there was less taking technology for granted.
