Just a quick addition to the thread.
Windows Vista now gone!
Last Sunday our old Windows Vista machine failed to boot and would not repair. Up to then it has been pretty good, not having any real issues that have perhaps made Vista a sore point over the years. It was time though as, not being updated, some things no longer run. Taking a couple of days out to sort I used a copy of Puppy Linux that I have had for a while on USB stick to backup the 100Gb or so of assorted photographs etc (backed up elsewhere but easy to do again) to external hard disk. I then installed a copy of Linux Mint, completely obliterating the old system. Then I re-loaded all the backed up data.
The computer system has 4Gbyte of RAM, 1Gbyte hard disc and 64 bit processor so I was not expecting too many issues. The only one which seems to be sorted is that I could not find a specific printer driver but have found one which was reccomended online and seems to work.
Fingers obviously crossed at the moment but, as yet, the change of system and current operation seems pretty straightforward. The computer seems to be working as well as it ever has. I was surprised at how easy it was!
