There was one on here some years ago, but cannot find it.

Sorry - I realise that's a pain, but the reasoning for the policy as it exists today is fully explained towards the end of that help page.
We are extremely grateful for those who take the time to contribute to The Archive, and hope that it's a perk that helps to attract and retain active forum members. I know it probably seems anachronistic in an age where so much can be found for free online, but as explained on the help page, other sites fund their file archives via advertising, subscriptions or donations - or just sell files outright - and we wanted to find a way to avoid all that, while retaining reasonable running costs and minimal admin effort.
