At the Scottish Meet recently I acquired a large box of Magazines gratis (thanks Dave Moll)
Amongst them were a few 'Radio Constructor' issues and the one dated October 1971 had an excellent article covering stock faults in valved A.M. receivers. I have scanned this so that newcomers can learn about common faults and I'm sure others will find it interesting as well.

Thanks for that Andy - a wondeful trip down memory lane!
Highly readable and very useful too.
An excellent scan, which printed off nicely.

I always read the "In your Workshop" articles. They were entertaining and very informative. I remember that the author (through Smithy) had a thing about Felicity Kendal - didn't we all - and he mentioned her or her posterior quite frequently.
Brian Felicity Kendal was, well i though a right cracker, the days of Smithy sure do bring back memories....kind regards....Alan.
ah i rember these stories sadly i gave away all of my radio constructor mags years ago

Thanks for that, very interesting.
This piece of writing is just so good it ought to be sticky! Everyone wanting to get involved in repairing valve radios should see it. I read it end-to-end immediately and appreciated the little tips - you always learn something.
It's a style of writing, informal but informative, that seems to have been lost. For a beginner, a large tome on basic electronics is intimidating. Dick & Smithy are much more real!
Well done Andy in capturing this for posterity...
Jeremy
duly stuck, maybe it would be good on the downloads page.
cheers Mark
Brings back memories...
I used to get The Radio Constructor every month in the early 70's.
I really enjoyed Smithy and Dick's section at the end.
reminds me of the first radio I 'fixed' as a youngster.
Maybe the repair story should be written elsewhere?
Andy
It'd be good if anybody has anything else like this on file.
